Listening to his teacher ramble on about the principles of particles, Jimmy found himself tapping the wall with his fingers to pass the time. He eventually developed a constant rhythm and pattern and he began to do it almost subconsciously. When his teacher called him out and told him to refocus and stop the distractions he realized something very odd, the tissue he had been holding in his hand while tapping the wall was missing. He got up and looked all around his area to see if he dropped it, but it was nowhere to be found.
            “Maybe I had thrown it away already,” he thought to himself, but in the back of his mind he knew that he hadn’t gotten up from his seat. The next day sitting in class, trying to escape the monotone voice of his teacher, Jimmy began to tap the wall again out of boredom. Remembering the oddity that occurred the day before, he held a tissue in his hand again and made sure to pay attention to what would happen to the tissue. After he got into a groove, Jimmy noticed that the tissue seem to slip out of his fingers and through the wall. He could not believe what had happened. “How can something travel through the wall…” Jimmy thought. After class, Jimmy snuck back into the classroom to try and see how this “travelling” would work, but he came up against some obstacles. He couldn’t get anything to pass through the wall but tissue and really thin paper, such as tissue paper, and even then it didn’t always work. In some areas, like through the doors and in the middle of the walls it wouldn’t work, but by his seat, right under the window, he could slip it through to the other side.
            Meanwhile the other side of the wall was the chemistry lab where the younger students studied. Having taken chemistry the prior year, Jimmy realized that if he wanted to, he could manipulate this “wall-jumping” to his advantage. If he could figure out a way to get answers to chemistry students through travelling pieces of tissue paper, he could sell the answers to tests and quizzes! “Brilliant,” Jimmy thought, “and its nearly untraceable. No one would suspect someone cheating who wasn’t even in the room!” By pushing the tissue through the wall, Jimmy would be collapsing his control over it, thus allowing his partner in crime to see it. Luckily Jimmy’s carpool Roger was in the chemistry class held at the same time as his physics block and he willingly agreed to try out the plan.
            On Roger’s first test day, Jimmy arrived early to class in order to get the seat by the window and came ready with tissues filled with chemistry equations. It was decided that Roger would get a seat closest to the physics lab and at a designated time, he would get up to throw something away and at that moment Jimmy would push the tissues across the barrier. When the time came, Jimmy resumed his usual bored tap against the wall and right on cue the tissue fell through. It was imperative that Jimmy escaped the reality of the classroom, by zoning out, so that he could focus on what seemed to be a fantasy where objects could pass through walls. As he had observed in the past, if he wasn’t completely displaced from the classroom and focused entirely on the tissue, then the tissue could get stuck inside the wall and not pass through. On the other side, Roger scrambled to intercept the note and then casually returned to his seat without anyone suspecting a thing. The process continued like this for a few months, and eventually word spread throughout the student body of the inner workings of Roger and Jimmy. Some students were furious at the idea, while others offered to pay for his “services.” Eventually Jimmy was able to make a large profit every week, but Roger was still his most valued costumer.
            Everything seemed to be going great and finals were approaching. Jimmy had said that his services would be strictly reserved for Roger during finals due to the higher chance of getting caught because the teachers are more on edge and aware during finals testing. The plan was set in motion, the time established, and the equations written out. Everything was ready. Roger took his normal seat next to the physics lab, but when Jimmy arrived to take his place next to the window, one of the angry students had taken his seat. Knowing that the transfer only works at that one area in the wall, Jimmy knew he was in trouble. He pleaded with the student begging her to let him have his normal seat but she would not budge. She was fed up with the cheating, as she worked extremely hard for her grades and believed everyone should do the same. Jimmy was hopeless, there was nothing he could do and there was no way he could warn Roger. When the time came to make the switch, Roger looked to the area where the tissue usually fell and nothing appeared. At first he didn’t panic, “maybe Jimmy just lost track of time,” he thought. But it was approaching the end of the test and still nothing had appeared. Roger looked down at his test and over half of it was blank. He needed those equations to pass this final and Jimmy wasn’t sending them through.
At that point Roger panicked and ran to the principles office and spilled everything. Jimmy and Roger were questioned and were forced to reveal their method. After that they were dismissed and told that they were suspended for the rest of the year and had to make up all of their failed classes over the summer in summer school. Although they had unknowingly figured out an applicable way to use one of the most complicated physics principles, they still had to be punished.

Quantum theory’s uncertainty principle says that since not even empty space can have zero energy, the universe is fizzing with particle-antiparticle pairs that pop in and out of existence. These “virtual” particles are the source of Hawking radiation.

Q is for ... Qubit

One quantum bit of information is known as a qubit (pronounced Q-bit). The ability of quantum particles to exist in many different states at once means a single quantum object can represent multiple qubits at once, opening up the possibility of extremely fast information processing.

Quantum objects can exist in two or more states at once: an electron in superposition, for example, can simultaneously move clockwise and anticlockwise around a ring-shaped conductor.

Unless it is carefully isolated, a quantum system will “leak” information into its surroundings. This can destroy delicate states such as superposition and entanglement.

Since the predictions of quantum theory have been right in every experiment ever done, many researchers think it is the best guide we have to the nature of reality. Unfortunately, that still leaves room for plenty of ideas about what reality really is!

In 1975, Stephen Hawking showed that the principles of quantum mechanics would mean that a black hole emits a slow stream of particles and would eventually evaporate.
