A hypothetical experiment in which a cat kept in a closed box can be alive and dead at the same time – as long as nobody lifts the lid to take a look.
She walked into the cafeteria on the first day of school and everyone fell silent. They stared. She blushed. They resumed their shallow, insecurity-ridden, lunchtime gossip whilst she sat by herself, eating suspiciously smelling cole-slaw and cardboard-like tater tots.
Becky Jacobs was homeschooled from Pre-K to 8th grade and her first day of high school was quite an overwhelming culture shock. Although her parents provided her with numerous socializing opportunities, Becky solely focused on her studies and didn’t make befriending people a priority. Growing up, no one had ever told Becky what he or she really thought of her, so she had no idea how or on what other people were measuring her. As a result, Becky’s lifestyle differed from that of average teenage girls. Her wardrobe, along with her makeup pallet and bedroom wall colors, consisted solely of eccentric and zany colors and patterns. Becky was different, but she hadn’t truly realized that until her first day of high school.
The piercing stares of her critical, superficial, petty classmates burned through her skin like an x-ray laser. As she looked around and met each and every judgmental stare, she finally recognized the differences between the other girls and her while realizing that those differences caused those students exclude and undervalue her.
After weeks and weeks of endless stares and countless giggles, Becky couldn’t handle the ridicule anymore. It got to the point where she could barely get out of bed in the morning out of fear of the humiliation that would ensue at school. She collapsed both mentally and physically as a result of her classmates’ judgment. She had finally given up and refused to go to school for three consecutive days.
On the fourth day of her absence, Becky received a visitor whom she didn’t even know by name but recognized. His name was Jason White and he came to check up on Becky because he noticed her absence from their biology class. After an exchange of flowers and hugs, Jason told Becky that he had seen the disapproving looks and heard the hurtful comments and wanted to reassure her that she had nothing to worry about because all of those stares and comments stemmed from insecurities that they were dealing with. He told her that he didn’t measure her based on her physical characteristics but for her skills in biology class and genuineness as a person.
After being reassured by her classmate, Becky built up the courage to return to school and finished the year with confidence and a best friend. The formerly shallow and insignificant students stopped measuring her based on her physical appearance and she never collapsed again.
