One school of thought says that the strangeness of quantum theory can be put down to a lack of information; if we could find the “hidden variables” the mysteries would all go away.
“And we have the tip-off!” the announcer for the high school basketball team announced. “The Tigers are in possession of the ball, heading towards the basket.” Steve, the point guard, was running down the court and passed it to Tyler, the star forward of the team. Tyler, standing at 6’ 6”, dunked the ball into the basket right away and the crowd went wild. The point guard for the opposing team got the ball and was moving down the court, but Tyler was already there to defend. They couldn’t get past his monstrous wall and failed to score. Steve got the ball again, and Tyler was already at the other end of the court. The crowd gasped in shock when Steve lobbed the ball to Tyler and he threw it into the basket again. Everyone wondered how it was possible that Tyler could move so quickly across the court. Does he have super speed? No one could figure it out.
The Tigers were now leading 63-32 in the third quarter. The visitors had possession of the ball again but where was Tyler? Already by the basket, yawning in boredom. “Sometimes it’s so boring being so good at what I do”, he thought to himself. Things just got a little more interesting, however, when his teammate stole the ball from the other team’s point guard! He was back on offense and before anyone could try to stop him, and he got the ball and slammed it into the basket. The crowd went wild and the other team’s spirits were absolutely crushed. They knew they had no chance of winning, especially against Tyler’s skill.
The Tigers won the game because of Tyler’s magical speed, but the opposing team was not amused by whatever was going on. After the game, the coach of the visiting team went over to congratulate the winning coach and ask him a few questions.
“Coach Scott,” the visiting coach John Larson said. “Great game buddy. You got yourself one heck of a team.”
“Thanks John, I appreciate that. Your team did a good job of hanging in there.”
“How does your boy Tyler get up and down the court so quickly? I’ve never seen anything like it!”
“That’s only for my team and me to know and for you and everyone else to figure out!” Coach Scott chuckled. “He really is a gifted athlete.”
“I hope you aren’t implying he’s doing something dishonest or harmful. Is he on steroids? He’s only in high school!”
“No, don’t be ridiculous John! I would never allow one of my athletes to harm himself in that way. It’s bad for their bodies and their reputations.”
“Then what is it? Can you please just give me a hint?” Coach Larson begged.
“Tyler is just a smart basketball player. He knows where he needs to be and when he needs to be there. When we have the ball he’s right where he needs to be: by the basket waiting to get the ball. When you guys have the ball he knows he needs to be back defending.”
“That’s it?” Coach Larson asked disappointedly. “There’s no magic or superpowers involved?”
“Nope. It’s as plain and simple as that.”
